Description

“Peter Smith of Branksome sends a shovelful of ovoids on to the blinding fire of Standard 5 No. 73019 near Masbury during a northbound run on the Pines Express.” These are the photographer’s words in his 1975 book published by Bradford Barton.

Peter and his usual driver, Donald Beale were well-known on the S&D for their locomotive handling.

On 5 January 1962, Donald and Peter gave Tony Richardson a footplate ride from Blandford to Bath and back again to Blandford. There is a selection of images from this day, as shown below.
