Description

Fowler 2P Class No. 40697 (built 1932, with 82F shedplate) and Bulleid West Country Class No. 34045 Ottery St. Mary (built 1946) are seen on an Up (northbound) passenger service – probably a through service – just north of the Winsor Hill tunnels in 1961.

The portal of the Down line tunnel is just visible on the left of the picture. In the foreground are a timber platelayers’ hut, a fogman’s hut and the end of a disused siding to the right. Note the siding is at at a higher level, indicating the steepness of the gradient of the main line.

40697 is shown as already allocated to Bath Green Park upon nationalisation in 1948 and remaining there until withdrawal in February 1962. 34045 was withdrawn in June 1964.
