Description

BR Standard Class 4 No. 76015 (built 1953) and BR Standard Class 9F No. 92220 (built 1960) – named ‘Evening Star’, the last steam locomotive built by BR workshops and, consequently, always destined to be preserved – pass over Masbury summit with an eight-carriage 9.03 am Bristol-Bournemouth service on Saturday 1 September 1962.

The date was poignant as, although this was not a long-distance service, all long-distance services and the associated 9F motive power would cease to run on the S&D after the following weekend.
