Description

On a dull, cloudy day, Fowler 2P Class No. 40697 (built 1932) and BR Standard Class 5 No. 73050 (built 1954) approach Masbury summit with a nine-carriage 9.03 am Bristol (9.53 am from Bath) to Bournemouth service. The reporting code of 2B92 is being displayed. No date is given for this image.

The photo shows in detail the Masbury Down Distant signal; by that time on a tubular steel pole and appearing to be fitted with a signal arm repeater.

40697 is shown as already allocated to Bath Green Park upon nationalisation in 1948 and remaining there until withdrawal in February 1962. 73050 is shown as allocated to Bath Green Park from new until July-August 1962 and from November 1962 until March/April 1964. What happened between then and final withdrawal in 1968 varies slightly between sources.
