Description

Fowler 2P Class No. 40564 (built 1928, with 82G Templecombe shedplate) and Bulleid West Country Class No. 34043 Combe Martin (built 1946) head the Pines Express service from Manchester to Bournemouth during a blustery afternoon in August 1961. They’re just short of the deep cutting that preceeds the tunnels. The Pines Express reporting code of 1O95 is displayed.

Today, this point is approaching the end of the restored single line from Midsomer Norton station – ahead of this, the cutting has been filled in.

40564 is shown as already allocated to Templecombe upon nationalisation in 1948 and remaining there until withdrawal in February 1962. 34043 was withdrawn in June 1963.
