Description

Driver, the late Donald Beale (d.1996) and fireman Peter Smith were a well-known footplate duo on the S&D in the late ’50s and early ’60s, able to extract the very best performance from their steam engines.

Here, Peter is seen at Blandford catching the water that is leaking from the tender of Fowler 4F Class No. 44102 (built 1925). The British Railways logo has been obscured and ‘SCRAP’ and ‘RIP’ can be seen on the tender.

44102 had been a regular performer on the 6.35 am Evercreech Junction to Poole goods service; we have a wide variety of photos of 44102 on goods services at or near Blandford.
