Description

Fowler S&D 7F No. 53808 (built 1925 as S&D No. 88, with 82F Bath Green Park shedplate) is pictured on a Down goods approaching Evercreech Junction on the S&D main line.

The photo has been taken from a footbridge just north of Evercreech Junction (adjacent to the 68 metre height mark on the current 1:25,000 OS map) and looks north-east with the A371 road bridge (Pecking Mill viaduct) just behind the train. In the distance is the Evercreech Junction Down Distant which is in the ‘on’ position [caution]. The buildings of Pecking Mill Farm can also be seen, to the left.

On the Up line in the middle distance is a 50 mph speed limit sign and, adjacent, an illuminated ‘T’ indicator for the end of a temporary restriction.

No date is given for this image.

53808 is shown as already allocated to Bath Green Park at the time of nationalisation in 1948 and remaining there until withdrawal in April 1964. Arriving at the Woodham Bros. Barry Island scrapyard in August of that year, the locomotive was rescued by the Trust in 1970 and returned to steam in 1987. Find out more about 53808 here.
