The peat railway when it was based at Washford

The ‘Steam on the Levels‘ event on 14/15 May at the Westonzoyland Pumping Station Museum will see the railtruck in operation at its new home, on loan from the S&DRT.

The 2′-gauge peat-carrying railway on the Somerset levels near Ashcott was established in the 1920s and last operated in 1983. It crossed the S&D Highbridge branch on the level – the scene of an infamous accident between a railtruck and a BR passenger train in 1949.
