Axlebox detail on L&SWR van (SR 42XXX)

A 1909-built ventilated van and a 4-plank open wagon designed for the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) left yesterday and will arrive with the Mid-Hants Railway on Tuesday. Both were acquired by the Trust from RNAD Bedenham.

Ventilated van RNAD 7401 was built in 1909 for the carriage of fruit and arrived with the Trust in 1984. Its original L&SWR number is unknown, as is the SR number, though the latter would have been in the form of 42XXX. The van carries the number 42085 even though the exact number is unknown.

The axlebox close-up illustrates the van’s L&SWR origins.

The L&BSCR goods wagon carries its original number of 24291 and is notable for a wooden frame. It was numbered 119 when with the RNAD. The wagon was acquired by us in 1993.
