Description

The Railway Clearing House was the official body established in the 19th century to facilitate inter-company payments for through tickets and traffic when passengers and freight were handled by more than one railway company. The payments depended upon the mileage covered over each railway company’s lines with the result that detailed and accurate information on the mileage of the railway lines was required. In order to further this, the RCH produced over the years a number of highly detailed (and colourful) maps covering the national railway system as well as more detailed maps outlining complex junctions.

At the beginning of the 20th century Britain’s railway network was reaching its peak. There were still lines to be constructed – in particular the cut-off routes built by the Great Western Railway – but the main network was now broadly complete. This new addition to Ian Allan Publishing’s comprehensive series of railway atlases draws upon the official RCH atlas of the railways of England and Wales for 1904. In 45 four-colour maps – which are reproduced in facsimile form – the complex network of railway lines that existed at the turn of the century are graphically recorded, with the routes of each individual pre-Grouping company clearly identified. The book also includes a comprehensive gazetteer of the stations featured, making it an essential work of reference to the railways of the period.
