John J.Allen established a furnishing business in Bournemouth in 1860. By 1899, the business had become a furniture shop, removal company, decorators, cabinet makers, upholsterers, house furnishers and funeral directors. Later they expanded to a chain of department stores, acquiring Brights of Bristol and Bournemouth, Bright & Colson of Exeter, Cavendish House of Cheltenham and Morgan Squire of Leicester, and the fashion chains Chanelle and Mayron. They were bought by House of Frazer in 1969, and were re-branded as Dingles. Their cabinet workshops were in Wharf Road, adjacent to Bournemouth West Station.
