On Wednesday 1 March, No. 88, now lettered out SDJR and given a 4P5G classification (slightly downgraded from 5P5G of S&D days), took a test train with nine coaches from Minehead to Williton and back. Gerry Leyman reports. "Edward Lobjoit and I went with Andrew Naish and Nigel Smart to Minehead and had a great time seeing 88 and riding the test train - me as offical Trust photographer for the day. 88 appeared to perform well apart form a couple of slips coming around the bend at the top of Washford Bank. Andrew Naish told me the boiler inspector was very happy with the performance of the boiler on return to Minehead. To a Leyman she seemed to go very well holding line speed all the way up the bank from Watchet to Washford. I managed to lose my hat - blown off - near Doniford Halt on the way out and had to go back on the way home to recover it. Needless to say nothing was done at Washford today." pics © Gerry Leyman
